Portable field microscopes are very essential in conducting microscopic studies in the world outside the laboratory setting. This kind of microscope can be a kind of stereo microscope that runs in batteries to provide illumination of the specimen. In other instances, portable field microscopes can be a simple compound microscope that uses battery powered light source.

The light source of this kind of microscope usually runs through the use of rechargeable batteries or sometimes it uses natural light coming from the sun to illuminate the sample. It is usually created to be small in size and comes with a carrying case to allow the transportation of the microscope to any location. This type of microscope can be carried anywhere in the filed to provide on site examination of specimen like in nature trips or in forensic examinations in a crime scene, which provide very vital insight in investigating samples on the spot.
